If you hit a problem where Magic Citations from Papers 3 suggests "you need to save document first" even though it's already saved, please upgrade your copy of Papers to the most recent version.
@mz2 I'm unable to add citations using magic citations, the papers3 pop-up says "you need to save document first" even though it's already saved? I can copy/paste cite keys from papers3 but then the bibliography doesn't automatically update? If i try to use "insert citation", it tells me that my document does not contain citable sources? What does this mean? One of the main reasons I was looking to switch to Manuscripts is because Magic Citations will work again, as I'm fed up of waiting for Papers3 support for Pages5. Please help!
update: also can't export (to word), I get the error "Line 160: xmlParseEntityRef: no name".
update2: now it seems when I press ctrl-ctrl to open up magic citations from papers3, it opens up a whole new copy of my Manuscripts document. so for every reference I add, it will open up a new copy of the document I'm working on?
Hm If I can't use magic citations and I can't export then it sort of defeats the purpose of switching to Manuscripts right now. It seems like it will be a great product once the kinks are worked out though!
@moluccensis this post actually contains instructions for how to cite without Magic Citations. Your questions really belong in separate posts – sorry, I'm really just pointing this out so the forum remains organised. I shall respond here and will move this response to a more relevant thread once you've had the chance to read it:
- The first issue you describe with Magic Citations is due to using a version older than 3.4.0 which fixes this issue. In Papers, go to Papers > Check for Updates… to get the most recent version.
- The issue with a new copy of Manuscripts launching is due to you having multiple copies of the app on your disk. Unfortunately Papers cannot know which one it should be sendings its citation data to (a limitation caused by the AppleScript communication mechanism used to send the messages between the two apps), and as such you need to ensure that you have only one version of the app on your disk. You can find out by right clicking and going to "Show in Finder" the Manuscripts dock icons which one you should move to Trash and remove.
- Regarding Pages and Papers, although this is really a support forum for Manuscripts but unfortunately I can tell you that the reason that the Pages support is still not there still remains that Pages lacks certain AppleScript hooks required for formatting citations (namely the ability to modify the selection and formatting such as super/subscript). The Papers team recently reviewed the situation and came to this conclusion. Reporting this to Apple really helps making the case that they should really add support (I know the Papers team has filed feature requests with Apple too).
- Re: the issue with Word export, could you send us the manuscript that fails to export to email@example.com? It will be received there by us Manuscripts developers who keep the document private. Example documents help a great deal in figuring out this kind of issues.

@mz2 Thank you so much for your quick response! Sorry for messing up the organisation of the forums, just getting desperate. I'm so keen to get this to work as it's showing such promise! Point 1 and 2 sorted out those issues, that's great! Now if only exporting will work then I can make the switch! I've sent a copy of the manuscript to firstname.lastname@example.org , hopefully that will help. Thanks again!
