• # Changing LaTeX font

Is there a simple way to change the default LaTeX font for inline equations? I don't see where this is done in the inspector.

Cheers!
David

• @dfm there isn't at the moment a way to change the LaTeX font used for equations. In the particular way we use MathJax (used for rendering math), it would require us passing through the entire document to re-render the math in a pretty costly form to re-render the math into a different font, and it would also require re-loading the document (and the way we use MathJax is indeed optimised for performance with very large documents – other options we are aware of would be worse).

So, it's unlikely we would change the math font used in the editor… However, changing the font used for LaTeX and LaTeX derived PDF export is something we could potentially offer in an update. Is this something that would fit your use case?

• @mz2 Absolutely. I understand that allowing different fonts for LaTeX and the display might violate the WYSIWYG feel that ManuscriptsApp seems to be aiming for, but it would spare users the need to manually edit the .tex files after exporting. All that said, despite the somewhat regular occurrence of kinks in the software, I'm enjoying using it and appreciate the regularity of mini-updates. Just in the last few days it's improved significantly. I'm looking forward to seeing how this software develops.

• @dfm cool, and thanks for the kind feedback! We'll see if we can adapt the LaTeX exports, totally see the need for the export stage customisation.

Am I right in thinking that if the math font were changed, it would typically be changed for all math in the document? Or would it be necessary to have a different font for inline vs paragraph level equations?

• @mz2 For my purposes, just being able to select a general "math font" would suffice. I suspect that others might have a preference for additional flexibility though. In regards to your initial response: would it be possible to add an option to select a default LaTeX font on start up, somewhere in the preferences menu maybe? Although real time font switching may be off the table, allowing it as a start up option would work for me. Or even as an aspect of the the manuscript template.

• @dfm Great - please add!
