Cite, receive citation suggestions and run PubMed searches with F1000 Workspace

Manuscripts now works seamlessly together with the citation tool included in F1000Workspace, an environment that allows you to collect, write and discuss scientific literature. F1000Workspace is especially well suited for biomedical researchers as it allows for direct PubMed searches and “smart citations”, i.e. biomedical literature citations suggested based on context of where you intend to insert citations.

Install the F1000Workspace Manuscripts plugin

To use Manuscripts together with F1000Workspace, you need to first sign up to F1000Workspace. After the signup process you can download the Manuscripts F1000Workspace plugin by clicking Tools > Manuscripts.app in the F1000Workspace website header.

Having got yourself an account and the F1000Workspace citation tool installed, citing with F1000Workspace is super simple:

  1. In your manuscript, place the text cursor where you want to place a citation.
  2. Enter ⇧⌘F on your keyboard to open F1000 and choose the references you want to cite.
  3. After choosing the references you want to cite, click “Cite” and the citations will appear in your manuscript.

As with all other means of inserting a citation, when you insert the first one in a manuscript, the app will ask if you would like to insert a bibliography. If you decline, you can always add a bibliography later.

Change the F1000Workspace citation keyboard shortcut

The F1000Workspace citation dialog is brought up by default with the keyboard shortcut ⇧⌘F . You may wish to choose a different keyboard shortcut in your workflow, especially as this shortcut also clashes with the “Find & Replace” keyboard shortcut in Manuscripts (as well as many other Mac apps). To change the citation shortcut, open the F1000Workspace preferences dialog by following these steps:

  1. Click on the F1000Workspace menu bar icon to open it. At the time of writing, the menubar icon looks like this: F1000Workspace Preferences
  2. In the F1000Workspace app menu, choose Preferences (⇧,) to reveal the preferences dialog.
  3. Click on “Change” to choose the citation shortcut.
