Equations: Add block-level and inline equations

You can add both block-level and inline equations to your manuscript using the equation tools.

Before you begin: If you don’t already have it, you’ll need to install LaTeX to give you access to mathematical symbols when defining your equations.

Add a block-level equation

To add an equation at the block level (also called display level):

  1. Create a placeholder for the equation. You can do this in several ways:
    • Click the equation symbol in the toolbar. Equation tool from toolbar
    • Use the menu item Insert > Equation in the main menu.
    • Use the smart gutter menu to the left of the paragraph that is in focus, either before or after the spot where you want the figure to appear. Click the gutter helper insertion menu (the blue + symbol), and choose Insert Equation.

      The placeholder looks like this:

  2. Click to edit the equation, then type or paste your equation using using LaTeX mathematical symbols.
As you enter symbols, your equation is rendered in real time.

  3. Click Caption to provide one for this equation.
If you don’t see a caption placeholder for this equation, select Show Caption from the gutter helper selection menu (the blue o symbol).

Edit a block-level equation

To edit an equation, click on the equation so that the equation editor pops up. When done, click anywhere outside the editor to close it and save your changes.

Hide or show captions for equations

To toggle captions on or off for an equation, you can either:

  • Right-click on the equation in the outline and select Show Caption/Hide Caption, or
  • With the focus on the equation, open the gutter helper selection menu (the blue o symbol) and select Show Caption/Hide Caption.

View a list of all equations

At the bottom of the manuscript outline, below Figures, you can view a list of your equations. Clicking an equation takes you to the equation location in the outline and manuscript.

Add inline math

To add an equation in a paragraph:

  1. Place the text insertion point in your paragraph, at the spot where you want to add the inline equation.
  2. From the main menu, select Insert > Inline Equation.
This creates a placeholder for your equation:

  3. Click the < Equation > placeholder to edit, then type or paste your equation using using LaTeX mathematical symbols.

    Entering an inline equation
As with block-level equations, your equation is rendered in real time.

Delete a block-level or inline equation

To delete a block-level equation, either:

  • Right-click on the equation in the outline and select Delete Equation, or
  • With the focus on the equation, open the gutter helper selection menu (the blue o symbol) and select Delete Equation.

    Deleting a block-level equation

To delete inline math, right-click on the equation and select Remove Inline Equation from the menu.
